NEWS FROM CORPORATE ARCHIVES

In the last newsletter, we asked for volunteers to form an Archives
Advisory Board. We are happy to announce that several Sandians responded
and the Archives Advisory Board has been established. This year's
members are Carl S. Smith, Electrical and Mechanical Design (9784);
John Duncan, Stockpile Surveillance (12303); Rose Cordova, Customer
Projects (7833); Bob Alexander, Security Requirements and Planning
(7432); and retirees Harold Rarrick, who has experience in nuclear
components, health physics, and development test; and Ben Benjamin,
who has experience in development test and photometrics. These individuals
provide expertise in a variety of areas. John Duncan and Harold Rarrick
have already started reviewing some of the hundreds of boxes kept
in Records Storage by the Corporate Archives. Our plan is to better
identify the materials and evaluate them according to established
retention schedules. The improved descriptive information is being
updated on the inactive records database, Versatile, and will allow
us to better respond to reference questions. Carl S. Smith, and co-worker
Ron Haid, Mechanical CAD/CAE (9783) were interviewed in March regarding
the history of Sandia's drafting department.

Archives Program at Sandia, please select "Frequently Asked Questions"

 Invasion
of the Microgear-Snatchers? This is just one example of the
recently indexed images on C-Quest. - A dust mite, no bigger
to the human eye than a tiny dot, crawls over one of Sandia's
micromachines. The machine turns gears, each smaller in diameter
than a human hair and one-hundredth the weight of the dust
mite, at hundreds of thousands of revolutions per minute.

Archives Assistant Shirley Morris has been indexing some of the
most recent Lab News photos on the C-Quest Database maintained by
the Creative Arts Department. To date, Shirley has completed scanning
selected 1997 Lab News photos, most of 1998, Area II photos, and
photos from the 1997 General History Book. These photos can be accessed
by anyone who has downloaded the C-Quest data base. If you have
questions about downloading C-Quest, call Russell Smith at 844-9139.
Once accessed, these photos can be downloaded into Word, Power Point,
and Excel.
CORPORATE ARCHIVES IS LOOKING FOR
ARTIFACTS!

Artifacts provide an important way of representing Sandia's
history and culture. Many Sandia commemorative materials include
the Thunderbird, chosen in a 1955 contest for the design of
5- and 10-year service pins. All employees were invited to
submit entries and the best four were printed in the Lab News.
Employees voted on the designs, choosing H.C. "Clyde" Walker's
submission, which netted him a $75.00 U.S. Savings Bond. The
original Thunderbird design had three distinct tailfeathers
and made a very attractive logo. Pins were presented to Sandians
who had over five years service; in 1956, this was more than
75 percent of the employees on roll. Recently, Harold Rarrick,
a retiree consultant, donated his five-year pin to the Corporate
Archives as well as a bolo tie (also incorporating the Thunderbird)
that he received to commemorate another Sandia anniversary.
In addition, Harold donated certificates he received for many
of the nuclear tests he worked on at the Nevada Test Site
(see the illustration). |
| Corporate Archives would like to obtain more artifacts
like these for our collection and to exhibit. We are looking
for every type of Thunderbird logo item, patches of all kinds,
pins, certificates commemorating special events, family day
memorabilia, and any other Sandia-related materials that employees
have collected through the years. If you would like to donate
artifacts to the Corporate Archives or know a retiree who
would be interested, please contact Myra O'Canna at 844-6315. |
