The National Collegiate Pulsed Power Research Institute (NCPPRI) addresses the critical need to both attract and develop college graduates with pulsed-power training for the Pulsed Power Program at Sandia National Laboratories.

The Pulsed Power Program at Sandia encompasses research in radiation effects, weapons science, inertial confinement fusion (ICF), inertial fusion energy/science, pulsed power technology, and other applications. Because of the cessation of underground tests, it is necessary to rely on aboveground facilities to qualify and certify weapons in radiation environments. While modeling and simulation can help replace underground tests, new and existing experimental facilities that use pulsed power technology are needed to validate these computations. Pulsed power technology is thus critical to a number of Stockpile Stewardship Program (SSP) weapons science campaigns, including Primary Assessment Technology, Dynamic Materials Properties, Advanced Radiography, Secondary Assessment Technology, Nuclear Survivability, and Inertial Confinement Fusion.

Sandia is suffering a loss of pulsed power staff as its population ages. With few students entering the pulsed power field, there is no quick fix to this problem. This loss of staff threatens the Nation's continued competence in pulsed power science and, hence, undermines the ability of the Department of Energy (DOE) to achieve the goals of the SSP. Most of the capability for pulsed power training rests with faculties at a handful of academic institutions. The NCPPRI focuses on these institutions to foster collaboration with Sandia and thereby encourage and interest students in pulsed power careers. In this manner we hope to develop a pipeline of trained graduates to meet Sandia's needs.
