Z-pinch program receives IndustryWeek award

The IndustryWeek magazine announced in the December 15 issue that the Z-pinch program at Sandia National Laboratories is receiving an award as one of 25 Technologies of the Year for 1997. Sandia is also receiving an award for development of a proton-based nonvolatile semiconductor memory device that costs less and requires less power than other computer memory devices. The winners will be honored during IndustryWeek?s third annual "Managing for Innovation Conference" in Chicago on March 30-31, 1998. The z-pinch award is specifically for the development and use of the Z accelerator for fusion and materials research. The award announcement states that the results of the z-pinch research "may have a profound impact on everything from nuclear weapons to microlithography to astronomy to perhaps achieving the dream of tapping fusion reactions for a limitless source of energy."
