Housing & Transportation: Visa Information

Visa Information

Non-US attendees are strongly encouraged to review current passport and visa requirements. Information can be viewed on the US Visa website.

If your country requires a letter of invitation to apply for a visa, please first register on the conference web site and then email ppc2005@sandia.gov requesting an invitation. You will be contacted by our staff and assisted with the process. No financial support is available for attending PPC2005.

Under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) citizens ofparticipating countries with machine-readable passports may enter the US for short-term business or tourist visits without having to obtain B-1 and/or B-2 visa stamps at the US Embassies or Consulates. The VWP is administered by the airlines; both US and foreign carriers participate. If your country does not participate in the VWP, you must obtain a B-1 visa before entering the US.

Criteria for eligibility for the VWP are:
  • valid passport from a participating country
  • travel on a participating airline
  • round-trip ticketing
  • visit not to exceed 90 days

Countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are:

Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Uruguay.

No extension of stay to another visa status is available. Travelers need to express the purpose of their visit to the immigration officer at their port of entry to obtain a WB status on their I-94 arrival/departure card. Any error should be corrected prior to leaving the INS inspection area; visitors are urged to speak with an INS supervisor if necessary. Note: Status and length of stay as a visitor to the US is defined by what is written on the I-94 card by the INS officer upon entry. No financial support is available for attending PPC2005.

The WB visitor (equivalent to the B-1 visitor for business) is on assignment in the US as a representative of their foreign employer. No US-based salary or fellowship payments are permitted. However, reimbursement of normal and unusual expenses for business purposes is permitted.

Further information is available from the American Physical Society (APS) Visa Information Website.
