Transitioning New Technology into Products

Transitioning Problem | Transitioning Solution | Technology Readiness Levels

The Problem
Developers of new technology are often trained, interested, and rewarded for innovative results in the environment described below:

  • Unique and innovative work as defined by the scientific community
  • Things that have never-been-done-before
  • High technical risk is the area of interest
  • Broad impact over many applications is key, one application is too limiting
  • Awards and patents are metrics for success
  • One device working is acceptable
  • Lab environment is where the results are seen
  • A rack of high performance support electronics is acceptable
  • Partial functionality is OK if progress is made and learning is occurring
  • Knowledge is the primary driver and motivator

Developers of products are often trained, interested, and rewarded for implementing solutions in the environment described below:

  • Product that is reliable and repeatable
  • A straight-forward and low risk approach
  • Single customer and application is typical
  • Satisfying the customer's need is critical
  • Production and operational requirements are very important
  • Must be easy-to-use and 100% functional
  • Meeting a delivery schedule is the primary driver and motivator

Because of these differing and often competing sets of issues, the development and integration of new technologies into products is difficult.
