A chemiresistor integrated microsystem has been
developed in partnership with the Intelligent Systems & Robotics Center.
The microsystem integrates four gas sensors and their control electronics on a
single silicon ASIC. This level of integration enables a chemical gas sensing
capability to be deployed on one inch micro-robots for mobile, distributed
sensing applications. The microsystem consumes 1 mA from a +5V source and
provides a 0 to +4V output. Two user selectable output options are provided to
extend the sensing range when gas concentrations are high or to improve the
sensing resolution when gas concentrations are low. When used in conjunction
with a pattern recognition algorithm this microsystem enables the
identification of multiple organic compounds as well as humidity. Gas
concentrations of 100 ppm for highvolatility organics and 1 ppm for low
volatility organics can be resolved.
