Core Capabilities and Focus
Sandia's Microsensor and Sensor Microsystem effort develops sensors and sensor arrays for chemical, physical, and biological detection. We employ Sandia’s extensive microfabrication and advanced packaging capabilities to construct prototype sensored microsystems to address national security applications. Novel materials development, including nanomaterials, plays a critical role in this work. Sandia personnel have expertise in a wide range of sensing techniques, including piezoelectric, fiber-optic, micro-optic, electrochemical, biochemical, and microimpedance approaches. Current activities focus on the identification of weapons of mass destruction in real-world environments and state-of-health monitoring of complex systems.
