The Manufacturing Science & Technology Center's Mechanical/Electronic Manufacturing Liaison department offers a variety of fabrication-to-print services. Sandia works with over 2,000 vendors to deliver hardware on time, within specification, at the lowest cost. The department provides complete project management services that include: design, design modification, fabrication liaison, and records management.
Capabilities:
- Drawing reviews with a focus on fabrication processes, quality, low cost, and quick turnaround
- Cost estimates (Electronic & Mechanical Fabrication)
- Fabrication source suggestions that are based on supplier capability and demonstrated performance; supplier ratings are used to assist in source selection
- Supplier surveys
- Manufacturing process support for suppliers
- Prototype and production project management
- Electronic transfer of design data
- Formal geometric dimensioning and tolerance classes for suppliers
- Quick turnaround using an expedited Task Order Process
Resources:
- The department staff has a combined total of 200 years in machining, sheet metal, and printed wiring board fabrication expertise
- Network of 2,000 capability-rated suppliers ranging from small machine shops and electronic shops to large, multi-task, technologically advanced, agile manufacturing centers
- Experience in managing a variety of activities: design, design modification, fabrication liaison, and records management
- A team of purchasing agents specifically trained in the procurement of fabricate-to-print hardware that work closely with Mechanical & Electronic Manufacturing Liaison personnel to obtain quality hardware at low cost
- Continuous communication with the customer and supplier throughout the product realization process
Accomplishments:
- Coordinated the fabrication of several million dollars worth of complex hardware to support Sandia's "Z" Machine
- Provided critical hardware on very short delivery schedules at substantial cost savings to support the TACMs program
- Provided critical hardware including a precision 28' long tube to update Sandia's Annular Core Research Reactor
- Provided intricate hardware with complex geometrical shapes to support many significant satellite programs including GPS
