Our risk assessment methodology for dams has helped dam owners secure their facilities. We’ve developed similar tools for communities and such assets as chemical facilities, power grids, prisons, water utilities, and power transmission equipment.

Sandia has a rich history of providing risk-based security solutions for high-consequence assets, including the nation’s nuclear weapons facilities. At the core of our expertise is deep familiarity with:

• An array of threats to both physical and cyber assets
• Inherent vulnerabilities of these assets to various threats
• The potential consequences of attacks or disasters

This expertise is captured in risk assessment methodology (RAM) tools (link to http://www.sandia.gov/ram/) that enable users to evaluate the security of different national infrastructures—such as chemical facilities, hydro-electric dams, and power grids—and determine optimal security strategies.

We can draw on this legacy to offer policymakers a broad spectrum of expertise to solve problems of national security, including:

• An understanding of the intelligence-driven threat to our nation
• Unique risk-assessment tools for national infrastructure
• An understanding of developing effective security architectures, including when/how security sensors should be applied to truly increase protection
• Security-sensor testing facilities and expertise
