Sandia’s Expertise

Sandia’s homeland security work builds on our long-standing experience with nuclear weapons, which started with our contribution to the Manhattan Project.

As national security needs evolved over the past 55 years, Sandia has initiated a variety of programs to keep pace with the new challenges. Among these programs was a major effort to ensure the security of the nuclear stockpile against terrorist incidents.

We’re now applying our experience to protect the nation against more general threats involving radiological and nuclear weapons.

Answers for today and tomorrow

Our deep knowledge of the issues gives us the background to respond quickly to today’s challenges. Equally important, Sandia’s teams have the perspective needed to anticipate emerging threats and initiate the research that can lead to tomorrow’s solutions.

A focus on real-world needs

We are the only engineering lab among the three nuclear weapons labs. For decades, we’ve focused on engineering systems and creating solutions and products that must work in the real world. It’s no accident that Sandia has the most successful track record among national laboratories for technology transfer and commercialization.

Better solutions through partnerships

We’re aware that partnerships with organizations that bring other kinds of expertise help us create better solutions. We’re therefore focus on building partnerships with universities, industry, and others. We also tap into expertise found throughout Sandia by building cross-cutting interdisciplinary teams.
