Sandia has channeled its significant expertise in infrastructure toward ensuring the protection of vital systems for military applications.

Of particular note is our work on energy systems. A reliable source of power is critical to the ability to use military might, and more efficient energy use at bases worldwide could create considerable cost savings for the Department of Defense.

Sandia has therefore developed an energy surety methodology to protect bases from power failures due to attacks or disasters. We’re also working with a number of partners to enhance and apply energy surety:

• We’re working with the Army Construction Engineering Research Lab on a pilot program that involves creating an energy surety microgrid (or a power supply system that is not connected to the primary power source).
• We’re consulting on issues in Iraq, focusing on increasing civilian power availability and solving power problems for U.S. troops.
