Sandia supports emergency responders and others in the homeland security community to mitigate the impacts of an explosives attack on people, facilities, and infrastructures.
Sandia leads the High-Explosives Home Team for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The High-Explosives Home Team is part of the Joint Technical Operations Team (JTOT), which deploys rapidly in response to threats.
Our work includes:
Our aqueous containment foam can be applied rapidly around an explosive device for significant reduction of blast effects and to capture WMD materials from explosive dispersal devices.
We use our understanding of blast and dispersal physics which is integrated into our advanced fast running modeling capabilities to provide rapid, high-fidelity information on expected blast effects and dispersal consequences for use in countermeasures planning and during actual crises. We model potential vulnerabilities to enable facility and infrastructure owners to harden assets before an attack ever occurs.
Our modeling has been used for a variety of applications, including force protection and Afghan tunnel destruction for the Department of Defense.
