Systems Solutions—Urban Defense

Protecting the millions of Americans who live in cities is a major goal of Sandia’s urban defense program. Urban defense is needed because certain facilities and transportation hubs, such as subways and airports, present critical and symbolic targets for terrorism. Relatively unsophisticated attacks to these facilities can have severe and far-reaching consequences.

Sandia’s chemical and biological defense programs are focused on helping local and national authorities detect and respond to potential terrorist attacks in metropolitan areas and critical facilities quickly, efficiently, and effectively.

The goal of our programs is to provide an integrated approach to urban protection. By adapting and leveraging existing technologies and communication tools and creating new systems as needed, we can help first responders and local decision makers prepare for acts of terrorism so that any attacks are detected, deterred, defeated, and mitigated.

Activities in our urban defense program span from prototyping and evaluating technology to developing and testing chemical and biological terrorism response plans. We also assist local authorities with community preparedness exercises and pre-event planning. For every project, we draw upon our expertise in science and systems engineering to develop, demonstrate, and deliver technologies and systems that will protect urban areas from the impact of chemical and biological attacks.
