Program for Response Options & Technology Enhancements for Chemical/Biological Terrorism (PROTECT)
We’re gratified that one of our facilities projects has contributed to the greater protection of one of our nation’s widely used subways. A collaboration between Sandia and Argonne National Laboratory, the Program for Response Options & Technology Enhancements for Chemical/Biological Terrorism (PROTECT) addresses vulnerabilities of civilians that were highlighted in the 1995 chemical agent attack in the Tokyo subway system. The program began in 1997 and takes advantage of recent advances in technology to prepare for and respond to such attacks in subways, airports, and office buildings.
- PROTECT is a network of fiber optics, chemical sensors based on Sandia’s new technology, and communications capabilities that is used in parts of the Washington, D.C. Metro system.
- PROTECT silently monitors the subway for chemical attacks 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Upon sensing a dangerous chemical, it triggers alarms that warn operators to shut down the trains and evacuate passengers.
- Tests have shown that PROTECT can significantly reduce response and evacuation time, potentially saving thousands of lives.
