FAME

(Pathogen signature analysis)

Fatty acids from membrane lipids serve as signature biomarkers. Sandia is developing a handheld analysis system, FAME, which has demonstrated pyrolysis/methylation of whole-cell fatty acid analytes in less than seven minutes.

The system analyzes volatile methyl esters of fatty acids using miniaturized pyrolysis and gas chromatography instrumentation, based on microfabricated systems created for Sandia's MicroChemLab™ chemical detector.

Supported by Lockheed Martin Shared Vision funding, FAME analysis development may provide a potential early warning system for evaluation of a contaminated area, shortening identification times from hours to minutes.
