MICA tool

A core proficiency in biology has been essential to MICA development.

Advanced Imaging

Sandia’s advanced imaging tools and techniques enable researchers to image individual cells with a much higher information content than what is possible with current commercial imaging technologies.

A significant strength in the MICA design is the integration of numerous elements:

  • Flow cytometry—a technique for sorting and examining microscopic particles suspended in a stream of fluid.
  • Optical tweezers that enable the selection of cells of interest or even a single cell and the arraying of cells for imaging.
  • Hyperspectral confocal imaging with multivariate curve resolution (MCR).

This integration enables—for the first time—translocation and the measurement of kinase activity in the same population of cells. Sandia’s goal is to analyze as many as 40 proteins and cellular stains at a time in three dimensions.
