Sandia National Laboratories: A Center of Diverse Research

Fact Sheet

Sandia National Laboratories is a U.S. Department of Energy multiprogram national laboratory with broad-based research and development programs contributing to the national defense, energy and environmental technologies, and economic competitiveness. The Labs' main facilities are located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Livermore, California. Sandia's assets, valued at more than $1 billion, include facilities for process development, environmental testing, radiation research, combustion research, computing, and microelectronics research and production.

Over its more than four decades of existence, Sandia's missions have expanded from an original focus of nuclear weapons research and development to include work on other advanced military technologies, energy programs, arms verification and control technologies, and applied research in numerous scientific fields. These areas of research include engineered processes and materials, computational and information sciences, microelectronics and photonics, engineering sciences, engineered systems, surety technologies, advanced manufacturing technologies, experimental computational and analytic evaluation, and pulsed power technologies.

Applied energy programs at the Labs focus on a wide range of improvements for existing energy sources and uses. Sandia also is seeking to develop and commercialize economically viable renewable energy sources, including solar and wind energy systems. Much of this work involves joint projects with industry.

Sandia is working to strengthen also the nation's economic security by transferring the commercially valuable technologies developed at the Labs to U.S. industry. Sandia has entered into more than 200 cooperative research and development agreements (CRADAs) with industry. CRADA partners range from some of the nation's largest corporations to small businesses with only a few employees. Sandia also has formed alliances focusing on helping entire industries become more competitive in the global marketplace. Examples include CRADAs with SEMATECH and the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences.

Sandia is a multiprogram laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Company, for the United States Department of Energy.
