MULTISCALE METALLURGICAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

The Multiscale Metallurgical Science & Technology Department is the principal organization for metallurgy research and engineering support throughout the Laboratories. Expertise covers a broad range of experimental and predictive capabilities that apply fundamental process, physical and mechanical metallurgy principles. Specific technical areas include joining (welding, brazing and soldering), thermal spray (conventional and advanced technologies, including cold and low pressure plasma spray), mechanical behavior, tribology (surfaces and wear), and materials & processes for microsystems packaging. The scientific focus is on materials structures, properties, performance and reliability. Staff supports an extensive variety of national security programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.
