The Joining and Coating Department conducts fundamental and applied materials science R&D in welding, brazing, soldering and thermal and cold spray deposition processes. Technical areas of expertise include: laser, resistance, and arc welding for high-reliability, precision components; active filler metal brazing of ceramics and metals; advanced soldering technologies; glass-to metal seals; thermal and cold spray process diagnostics and controls; process characterization, modeling and correlation of joining and coating properties to materials performance; multivariate analysis and unique engineering solutions to challenging technical problems. We support a broad range of Sandia and DOE/NNSA design, development and production programs, including nuclear weapons, defense systems and assessments, energy, and nonproliferation applications. We collaborate with other government agencies, universities, and industrial partners, ranging from large U.S. corporations to small, local businesses.
