K-15 Meeting, NHTC, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Vish Prasad (Chair) was not able to attend the meeting. Adrienne Lavine (Vice Chair) presided over the meeting.
Yogesh Jaluria presented a report from the Executive Committee.
-The ASME letterhead that was available for use by the K-committee chairs has now been discontinued. An electronic version will be sent to K-Committee chairs by Y. Bayazitoglu.
-Members are encouraged to help fundraising efforts. The current focus is on funding the Memorial award for which $25K is needed. The executive committee is working on additional awards. Fundraising ideas are being solicited.
-Session chairs are encouraged to become more active in inviting papers. There is a concern that the centralized system is not ideal – and we need to bring back some of the emphasis on session organization at the K-committee level.
-Conference information and registration is expected to become web-based in the future.
-There is serious concern about the lack of attendance at the NHTC. This could be due to the use of Albuquerque as the conference site for two consecutive years.
-The 2001 NHTC will be co-located with AIAA on the west coast in June.

Vish Prasad, chair of the committee could not attend the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Adrienne Lavine, the vice-chair. She reported the following item:
-Dave Zumbrunnen has resigned as secretary due to other commitments. He will be replaced by Khairul Alam.
-There has been a proposal to change/reduce the terms for K-15 chair/vice-chair/secretary from 3 years to 2 years, since the current terms require a major time commitment.
Costas reported that, overall attendence was expected to be lean – this was confirmed at the session on laser processing.
The general call is out and abstracts are due Sept. 30. We need to suggest keynote speakers for the 2000 NHTC to S.C. Yao. The following sessions are planned.
-Transport Phenomena in Materials Processing and Manufacturing (Khan/TBD)
-Transport Phenomena in Materials Processing at the Micro-and Nano-Scales (Alam/Longtin) (Coordinate with K-8)
-Heat and Mass Transfer in the Manufacture and Assembly of Microelectronics (Mahajan/Lee)
-Advanced Methods for Sensing and Control of Thermal Processes in Mfg. (Pitchumani/Sharma)
Majid Charmchi could not attend the meeting. His KCR meeting will be attended by Bob Jacobs. The session chairs should contact him for planning purposes. The following sessions have been proposed and a call for papers will go out.
-Multiphase Flow and Heat Transfer in Manufacturing and Materials Processing (J. Khan/TBD) (coordinate with K-20, Malcolm Andrews)
-Transport Phenomena in Net Shape Manufacturing (S. Lee/TBD)
-Heat Transfer in Composite Materials Processing (Pitchumani/TBD)
-Transport Phenomena in Polymer Processing (Zumbrunnen, Karwe)
-Transport Phenomena in Spray and Coating Processing (Jog/Bergman)
- Transport-Induced Phase Transformations in Materials Processing (Matt Krane/Xianfan Xu)

-Mesoscopic Heat Transfer and Control of Thermal Processing (Sharma)
-Laser and Plasma Processing (perhaps join with K-20) (Xu and Chiu)

7. Possible Name Change
The idea of broadening the title of the committee to "Transport Phenomena in Manufacturing and Materials Processing" was discussed. There was general consensus that this change should be made. Lavine will follow through.
8. Other business
Roop Mahajan had sent a proposal by e-mail suggesting that he organize a forum for discussing unresolved/controversial transport issues in Materials Processing. There was general approval of the idea. A variety of suggestions were made such as: that it be organized as as panel, that it be organized as discussions at the end of each paper session, that it involve other committees to provide a broader range of topics. Lavine will contact Mahajan and ask that he follow through.
A representative from K-10 (Heat Transfer Equipment) emphasized the importance of getting more industry people into the sessions. In particular, there should be more interaction between K-15 members and K-10 (specialty is design and fabrication of heat transfer equipment). Another area that seems to be critical for the industry is the casting of single crystals.
