K-15 Meeting, IMECE, Opryland Hotel, Nashville, TN

1. Vish Prasad called the meeting to order and made the following announcements:

(a) The executive committee has approved the name change of the K-15 committee to "transport Processes in Manufacturing and Materials Processing"

(b) The proposal to shorten the terms of the K-15 officers was not approved since the terms are written into the ASME bylaws and are uniform for all K-15 committees

(c) The report on the NSF/ASME workshop on has now been published and is available

2. Report from HTD Executive Committee

Yogesh Jaluria presented the report from the Executive Committee.

-The next NHTC meeting to be held on Aug. 20-22 at Pittsburg will have S. C. Yao as the program chair. The session organizers workshop at the IMECE was scheduled for 11/18/99

-Members are encouraged to correct their e-mail addresses in the ASME records since 40% of the addresses are wrong.

-There have been a number of complaints regarding "ASME" from the different divisions. It is felt that the organization does not treat its members very well, and the registration fee is too high.

-Journal of Heat Transfer will become electronic and will be available online. Dr. Vijay Dhir will become editor of JHT. There is a proposal to increase the number of volumes per year. The journal makes a profit, and the profits could be used to fund some of the proposed endowments.

-There are positions open in the editorial boards of some ASME transactions – nominations are invited.

-There is concern about the lack of conference papers in the HTD. The 1999 IMECE has 166 HT papers in approximately 40 sessions (some joint). Members need to try and increase the numbers of papers in the meetings. Extended abstracts can be used instead of regular papers if doing so will improve the number of papers and number of attendees from the industry.

-The 2001 NHTC will be co-located with AIAA on the West Coast in June.

- Future call for papers is to be directed towards session chairs.

 

 

3. 2000 NHTC (Yogendra Joshi-KCR)

34th National Heat Transfer Conference, Hilton and Towers Hotel, Pittsburgh,
August 20-22, 2000

The National Heat Transfer Conference is co-sponsored by the ASME, AIChE, ANS and AIAA.

The following are the reported number of abstracts in the sessions:
-Transport Phenomena in Materials Processing and Manufacturing (Khan/TBD) – 10 abstracts
-Transport Phenomena in Materials Processing at the Micro-and Nano-Scales (Alam/Longtin) – 9 abstracts
-Heat and Mass Transfer in the Manufacture and Assembly of Microelectronics (Mahajan/Lee) -# abstracts unknown
-Advanced Methods for Sensing and Control of Thermal Processes in Mfg. (Pitchumani/Sharma) – 5 abstracts

-Melting and Solidification Heat Transfer (Dick Smith with AIChE) -14 abstracts

Roop Mahajan was requested to organize a session on "Issues in the Materials Processing Industry"

4. Planning for 2000 IMECE at Orlando (Majid Charmchi-KCR)

Majid Charmchi reported that there will be a total of 170 sessions. HTD will get at least 35 sessions. 20% of the sessions are industrial/highlighted topics. Extended abstracts that can be submitted at a later date than usual are acceptable for the sessions. Authors can submit abstracts online. Authors will be actually able to see the abstracts on the website. The chair/co-chair of a session will need special password to make entries in the website.

Adrienne Lavine attended to Manufacturing Division meeting as the K-15 representative. She will contact ASME/MED to determine if there should be joint coordination of some of the sessions.

-Heat Transfer in Composite Materials Processing (Pitchumani/Jacob)
-Transport Phenomena in Polymer Processing (Zumbrunnen/Karwe)
-Transport Phenomena in Spray and Coating Processing (Jog/Bergman, jointly with Fluids Div.)
- Transport-Induced Phase Transformations in Materials Processing (Matt Krane/Xianfan Xu)

Tom Voth and M. K. Alam will attempt to put together a industry panel on heat Treatment issues.

5. Other business
  1. Roop Mahajan requested that the minutes of the 1999 NHTC be amended to reflect that he wanted the K-15 committee to organize a forum on unresolved/controversial issues in materials processing.
  2. Vish Prasad, Chair of the K-15 Committee, formally announced that his term as chair will be over at the end of June 2000. Adrienne Lavine will take over as Chair at the next NHTC, and Khairul Alam will be the Vice Chair.
  3. A vote of thanks to Vish Prasad for his leadership of the K-15 Committee was proposed and passed.
