Advanced Internal Combustion Engines – Linear Alternator Configuration

Program Goals
Provide hydrogen to electricity converter – stationary and transportation

  • High efficiency (50%)
  • Fuel flexible
  • Low emissions
  • Established technology

Approach

1. Utilize Otto cycle to maximum advantage

2. Utilize homogeneous charge compression ignition for constant volume combustion and high compression ratio

Free Piston / Linear Alternator Configuration

  • Provides electronic control of compression ratio
  • Free piston trajectory – less TDC dwell
  • Advantageous for high compression ratio
  • Inherent fuel flexibility

Results

  • Ideal Otto cycle approached
  • 56% indicated efficiency measured
  • Two stroke cycle scavenging system designed
  • Linear alternator undergoing testing
  • Industrial interest growing
