2016 Southwestern Public Utilities Commission (SW PUC) Energy Storage Workshop

May 3, 2016

Albuquerque, New Mexico

The United States Department of Energy, Office of Electricity Delivery and Reliability (US DOE/OE) and Sandia National Laboratories hosted a one-day Energy Storage Workshop for Southwest Utility Regulatory Commissioners on May 3, 2016, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Overview

Consumers want cleaner, more efficient, and cost-effective electricity. Providers, who are tasked to meet those needs and help create a smarter grid, want to assure investors of reliable return on investment and to satisfy their customers. Energy storage represents an important and integral bridge for potential gaps in supply and predictable peak conditions the new, smarter electricity grid will experience. Through the technologies associated with batteries, electrochemical capacitors, flywheels, and others, energy storage can move energy where it needs to be, when it needs to be there. Policy and regulatory leadership is needed at state and regional levels to help guide the approach to assessment of energy storage services, how energy storage should be treated in integrated resource planning, and the type asset energy storage represents for electric utilities.
