Forum to Address High PV Penetration of the U.S. Grid

ES-Select™ Tool is released

The ES-Select™ Tool has been released for public download. It is comprised of an installation application (FTP download, 173.5 MB) and a data update utility for those who previously downloaded the beta version (FTP download, 3.0 MB).

The tool aims to improve the understanding of different electrical energy storage technologies and their feasibility for intended applications in a simple, visually comparative form. It treats the uncertainties in technical and financial parameters as statistical distributions.

ES-Select™ was created by KEMA in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories, and licensed for public use.

DOE Annual Storage Conference Sets Records

The U.S. DOE Energy Storage Systems Program (ESS) conducted a record-breaking Update Conference at the Washington DC Marriott Hotel on Nov. 2 – 4, 2010. Normally expecting approximately 150 participants at its yearly event, this year DOE hosted more than 500 attendees!

In addition to its usual roster of energy storage-related projects, DOE's 2010 agenda reflected increased national interest in energy storage issues, as evidenced by ESS involvement in both the ARRA and ARPA-E Programs.

ARPA-E Selects Grid-scale, Rampable Energy Storage Projects for Funding

Through funding by ARPA-E (Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy) under the Recovery Act, the US Department of Energy has designated its second round of awarded Energy Storage projects (12). Totaling more than $27M, the projects are aimed at Grid-scale, Rampable, Intermittent Dispatchable Storage (GRIDS) efforts.

The Advanced Research Projects Agency — Energy (ARPA–e) Announces Funding Opportunities for Grid-scale Storage Projects

ARPA-E has announced a $30M FOA for Grid scale Energy Storage, seeking revolutionary new systems that provide energy, cost, and cycle life comparable to pumped hydropower, but are modular and can be widely implemented at any location across the power grid. Proof of concept and prototype development will be considered for high risk / high pay off concepts

ARPA-E Selects Six Energy Storage Projects

The U.S. Department of Energy's ARPA-E (Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy) has selected 37 projects to pursue breakthroughs that could fundamentally change the way we use and produce energy. Funded with $400 million under the Recovery Act, ARPA-E announced the selection of projects for its first solicitation. From over 3,600 initial concept papers received, approximately 300 full applications were requested and 37 awardees were selected.

Among the 37 awardees are six projects in the Energy Storage area.

Funding Opportunity Announcement: Novel Electrical Energy Storage for Grid Applications

The DOE Office of Electricity (OE) Energy Storage Systems Program is initiating a program through Sandia National Laboratories to fund university-applied research projects in novel electrical energy storage for grid applications.

The goal of this solicitation is to identify and prove new concepts that could significantly advance large-scale energy storage system technology. This solicitation will expect to fund up to $3M in energy storage technology-applied research projects. Contracts will be for up to 36 months in length with the maximum award for the life of the contract being $600K.

Spain‘s IBERDROLA Energy Group Announces First Call for the Perseo Awards

The IBERDROLA Group of Spain is now accepting applications for its Perseo Awards. The Awards are an initiative by IBERDROLA to promote projects or companies in their initial stages of development, based on innovative technological applications in the clean energy sectors. Perseo Awards are part of IBERDROLA’s efforts to promote energy storage technologies associated with electricity grid networks and for capturing and storing CO2 in combination with clean combustion. PERSEO recipients receive the financial support of the IBERDROLA Group as a business partner in their projects.

The deadline for applications is June 15, 2010.

FOA 36 Energy Storage Demonstration Projects Selected

The DOE Energy Storage program has selected 16 energy storage demonstration projects under FOA 36 entitled “Smart Grid Demonstrations”.

Selected projects cover the following areas:

  •  Large Battery System (3 projects, 53MW)
  •  Compressed Air (2 projects, 450MW)
  •  Frequency Regulation (1 project, 20MW)
  •  Distributed Storage (5 projects, 9MW)
  •  Technology Development (5 projects)

Large Battery and Regulation projects will represent a tenfold increase in power scale! Compressed Air will double the number of plants worldwide.

The total amount of Federal funding is $185M with a costshare of $585M from the recipients.

Energy Storage Industry Profits from ARRA Initiatives

A number of companies involved in grid scale storage have been awarded funding under the ARRA Manufacturing Initiative for Electric Drive Vehicles.

The grid storage industry is also taking advantage of tax incentives offered under the Recovery Act for Advanced Energy Manufacturing to create new Clean Tech Manufacturing jobs. See the article here.

BES Selects Six Energy Storage Research Centers

The Office of Basic Energy Sciences has selected six Frontier Research Centers in the area of energy storage. The new Centers will pursue topics identified in the 2007 workshop report Basic Research Needs for Electrical Energy Storage.

Initially, five major U.S. universities and General Electric Laboratories will be funded at $2–5 million each per year, for a planned five-year period.

Supported in part by funds made available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Centers will bring together leading scientists to address fundamental issues related to energy storage.
