From its early emphasis on battery technologies, the ESS Program now embraces a variety of storage formats.

Batteries play an increasingly important role in energy storage, and ESS program capabilities at SNL are at the forefront of developments in that area. However, the importance of energy security, especially as it relates to electricity grid-related issues, has prompted DOE and the ESS Program to embrace emerging technologies that are directly related to grid issues.

The ESS Program partners with industry, government and academia in a variety of storage developments relating to grid issues: flywheels, compressed air energy storage (CAES), advanced battery technologies, modular energy storage, micro grids, and power electronics, to name only a few.
