Applicability, Exceptions, and Consequences

This corporate procedure applies to all who operate, or oversee employees who operate earth moving equipment.

Required Action

Operate Equipment Managers Ensure all operators are qualified and informed in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions applicable to his/her work environment.
Operate Equipment Members of the Workforce authorized and qualified to operate earth moving equipment
  • Operate equipment according to manufacturers' instruction manuals.
  • Wear seatbelt if available.
  • Refer equipment malfunctions to the appropriate organization for repair.
Obtain Operator Qualification Members of the Workforce who operate equipment
  • Obtain qualification by training or experience  prior to operating equipment:
  • Be informed in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions applicable to his/her work environment. At a minimum, this must include :
    • Operating characteristics.
    • Capabilities and limitations.
    • Affects on variables.
    • Safety features.
    • Manufacturers' operating procedures.
Inspect and Maintain Equipment Managers Ensure equipment inspections are performed according to manufacturer’s instruction manuals.
Inspect and Maintain Equipment Members of the Workforce who operate equipment
  • Perform equipment inspections, including pre-use and periodic, as recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Refer equipment malfunctions to the appropriate organization for repair.
  • Ensure equipment audible/visual alarm is in operating condition.
