Procedure Overview

This procedure describes requirements for work with injurious corrosive materials and use of safety showers and eyewashes.

Procedure Requirements

Training

Activity Responsible Individual Required Action
Ensure Training Compliance Managers

Ensure that Members of the Workforce who may be exposed to  injurious corrosive materials, or have a safety shower or eyewash in their work areas, are instructed in the location and proper use of safety showers and eyewashes.

Note: Training in the location and proper use of safety showers and eyewashes may be included as part of Site-Specific Chemical Safety Training (CHM103).  A Safety Shower and Eyewashes Awareness and Use Guide has been developed to aid in training (see the Industrial Hygiene Program website).

Work Areas Where Injurious Corrosive Materials Are Present

Activity Responsible Individual Required Action
Manage Work Areas with Injurious Corrosive Materials Managers

Ensure that:

  • Potential exposure to  injurious corrosive materials, necessitating suitable facilities for quick drenching, are identified, evaluated, and controlled.
  • The division ES&H team industrial hygienist is contacted to perform an exposure assessment for potential exposure to injurious corrosive materials.
  • Suitable facilities (e.g., safety shower, plumbed/portable eyewash) for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body are provided in work areas where Members of the Workforce may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials.
  • The division ES&H team industrial hygienist is contacted to re-evaluate potential exposure to injurious corrosive materials when a change in workplace conditions indicates a new or increased hazard exists.
Report Use of Safety Shower or Eyewash Members of the Workforce at SNL/NM Report any emergency use of a safety shower or eyewash to the Water Quality Point of Contact: Joe Mauser. The discharge will be evaluated to determine whether any regulatory agencies need to be notified, or if any further action is required.
Report Use of Safety Shower or Eyewash Members of the Workforce at SNL/CA Report any emergency use of a safety shower or eyewash by notifying the ES&H Hotline: (925) 294-3724. The discharge will be evaluated to determine whether any regulatory agencies need to be notified, or if any further action is required.

Work Areas Where Optional Safety Showers and Eyewash Units Are Provided

Activity Responsible Individual Required Action
Manage Work Areas Where Optional Eyewash and Safety Showers Are Provided Managers

When optional safety showers and eyewash units are provided, ensure that the units are:

  • Procured, installed, inspected, and maintained in the same manner as those units in work areas where Members of the Workforce may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials.
  • Tagged-out-of-service when they are no longer desired.

Installation of New or Reapplied Plumbed Safety Showers and Eyewash Units

Activity Responsible Individual Required Action
Install New or Reapplied Safety Showers and Eyewash Units Managers

Ensure that

  • Eyewash units and safety showers are:
    • Procured to meet ANSI Z358.1-2004 specifications.
    • Installed by Sandia Facilities (e.g. Facilities Management and Operations Center).
    • Located in well-lit and accessible locations that can be reached in 10 seconds or less.
    • Located on the same level as the hazard, and the path of travel is free of obstructions (e.g., intervening doors) that may prevent immediate use or cause further injury.
    • Located immediately adjacent to the hazard when an  injurious corrosive material is used in the area.
    • Identified with a highly visible sign within the area served by the safety shower and/or eyewash unit.
      • Post the Eyewash/Safety Shower Sign (ES&H Sign Generator–Eyewash and Safety Shower Sign), if a sign is not provided with the unit.
    • Compliant with the Electrical Safety Manual regarding electrical outlets, which requires that:
      • No electrical outlets be located within 3 feet of the vertical axis of a safety showerhead or eyewash unit.
      • Electrical outlets located within 6 feet of a safety showerhead or eyewash station be ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets.
    • Tagged-out-of-service when they are no longer required.

Existing Plumbed Safety Showers and Eyewash Units

Activity

Responsible Individual

Required Action

Manage Existing Safety Showers and Eyewash Units Managers

Ensure that:

  • Eyewash units and safety showers meet ANSI Z358.1-2004 specifications.
  • Eyewash units and safety showers are:
    • Located in well-lit and accessible locations that can be reached in 10 seconds or less for areas where an exposure assessment has determined a safety shower and eyewash are necessary.
    • Located on the same level as the hazard, and the path of travel is free of obstructions (e.g., intervening doors) that may prevent immediate use or cause further injury for areas where an exposure assessment has determined a safety shower and eyewash are necessary.
    • Located immediately adjacent to the hazard when  injurious corrosive material is used in the area.

Self-Contained Eyewash Units

Activity Responsible Individual Required Action
Manage Self-Contained Eyewash Units Managers
  • Ensure that:
    • Self-contained eyewash units are used when a plumbed unit is not available or feasible.
    • Emergency eyewash bottles are not used in lieu of a plumbed or self-contained eyewash when an eyewash is required.
  • Ensure that self-contained units are:
    • Purchased to conform to ANSI Z358.1-2004 per the manufacturer.
    • Identified with a highly visible sign within the area served by the eyewash unit.
      • Post the Eyewash/Safety Shower Sign (ES&H Sign Generator–Eyewash and Safety Shower Sign), if a sign is not provided with the unit.

Inspection of Safety Showers and Eyewash Units

Activity Responsible Individual Required Action
Inspect Safety Showers and Eyewash Units Managers

Ensure that eyewash units and safety showers are inspected as follows:

  • Plumbed eyewash units are activated once per week.
  • Plumbed safety showers are activated once per month.
  • Self-contained eyewash units (e.g., portable eyewash stations) are maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions (e.g., replace flushing fluid).
  • Inspections are documented near the device (e.g., tag) or another retrievable method (e.g., Maximo).

Note: Inspection of eyewash units and safety showers tagged-out-of-service is not required.
