Procedure Overview

This procedure addresses the management and disposal of scrap metal, including volumetrically contaminated metal.

Procedure Requirements

Identification

Step Responsible Individual Required Action
Identify Scrap Metal Members of the Workforce
  • Determine if the scrap metal that you have generated or that is otherwise under your control is subject to the requirements of this procedure.
  • If the scrap metal meets either of the following criteria, comply with the handling and disposal requirements of this procedure:
    • Scrap metal that is volumetrically contaminated metal according to the glossary definition.
    • Scrap metal that comes from a current radiological area.
  • Use the procedure flowchart to help identify scrap metal that is subject to the requirements of this procedure.

Disposition

Step Responsible Individual Required Action
Dispose of Scrap Metal Members of the Workforce
  • Do not release scrap metal that is subject to the requirements of this procedure directly or indirectly to an offsite area for commercial scrap metal recycling.
  • Dispose of scrap metal that is subject to the requirements of this procedure according to the following requirements:
    • Dispose of volumetrically contaminated metal according to the requirements in ESH100.2.ENV.23, Manage Radioactive Waste at SNL (at SNL/CA, ESH100.2.ENV.16, Manage Radioactive Waste at SNL/CA), or ESH100.2.ENV.24, Manage Mixed Waste at SNL (at SNL/CA, ESH100.2.ENV.17, Manage Mixed Waste at SNL/CA), as appropriate for the type of metal and any contaminants or constituents present.
  • Store and handle volumetrically contaminated scrap metal in accordance with the requirements in ESH100.2.RAD.1, Implement Radiation Protection Procedures.
  • Dispose of scrap metal that cannot be recycled (refer to the flow chart) by submitting it on a Waste Description and Disposal Request).
