Profile: I have been involved in the standards process since 1968 in the steel industry. Involvement in electronic data interchange started in 1976 when managing a new Accounts Receivable project. We required our lock box banks to transmit check information electronically, in turn, our accounts were undated with receivable information the same day the checks were received. Next, in 1978, our automotive trading partners started doing proprietary EDI with us. By 1984 we had 30 EDI partners, all in different formats, requiring too much MIS time. This spurred our involvement with the AIAG and ANSI X 12 in search of a common format. I have held numerous chairperson positions at AISI, AIAG, and X12, most notably as chair of Materials Management Committees even though my background was all with financial systems.
