Our research efforts are characterized by scientific excellence, integration of basic and applied research, and impact on U.S. industry and DOE technology programs.

Sandia conducts Basic Energy Science research supported DOE's Office of Science in three key areas:

Chemical Sciences
Material Sciences
Geosciences

To best achieve the goals of integration and impact, we use a strategy of colocating basic and applied activities.  For example, researchers in the chemical sciences area are colocated with researchers supported by DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at our Combustion Research Facility, located at Sandia's California location.
