Cover of the Nov/Dec 2001 issue of Petrophysics. Illustration taken from manuscript by Weiss
et al. Visualization of electromagnetic induction in an electrially anisotropic formation.
Yellow streamlines indicate the path taken by induced eddy currents in a horizontal transverse
anisotropic formation excited by a time-harmonic horizontal magnetic dipole source (orange arrow). In contrast
to the circular, coaxial patterns seen in isotropic materials, the effect of anisotropy is to distort
the current paths into the conducting plane (here, horizontal), regardless of the source orientation.
The blue feature is an isosurface of current density whose "hourglass" shape indicates a decreased
current flow in the resistive vertical direction.
