Description:
This project was motivated primarily by three long-range goals in the oil & gas community:
increasing
hydrocarbon recovery rates to > 70%, minimizing water production,
and "smart" placement of drilling
platforms to optimize reservoir penetration. It was modeled after the DeepLook project in which a
"collaboration entity" (such as this NGOTP project team) serves as the hub which integrates
market needs of
the oil and gas community, technology innovation and development, and commercialization of the
technical product to the oil & gas service companies. Loosely stated, the class of geophysical
production problems of interest included not only finding hydrocarbon resources but also monitoring production,
enhancing steerable wellbore systems and impacting the control safety/environmental aspects of
hydrocarbon production. As such, our technical focus was directed toward joint seismic/electromagnetic
methods for subsurface imaging which combines the high spatial fidelity of the seismic wavefield
response with the extreme sensitivity to fluids of the electromagnetic response.
