Thomas K Landauer, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology,
University of Colorado at Boulder, and President of Knowledge Analysis
Technologies, LLC. (KAT). Dr. Landauer holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University,
and has held regular faculty appointments at the Harvard Graduate School
of Education, Dartmouth College, Stanford, and Princeton Universities.
He was for 25 years Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell
Laboratories and its successor, Bellcore. At Bellcore he was director
of Cognitive Science Research, a group of computer scientists, linguists,
and cognitive psychologists who conducted research on computer and communication-based
tools for enhancing human learning and performance, including the original
development of the theory and implementation of LSA. Since 1994, he
has been a Professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Fellow
of The Institute of Cognitive Science. He has been president of KAT
since its founding in 1998. Dr. Landauer has published over 120 articles
and authored or edited four books, including The Handbook of Human-Computer
Interaction, and The Trouble with Computers: Usefulness, Usability and
Productivity, winner of the Association of American Publishers award
for best book in Computer Science in 1994. Dr. Landauer is an internationally
recognized leader in applied cognitive science research. He serves on
several editorial boards in relevant fields, and is a fellow of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Experimental
Psychology and Human Factors and Ergonomics Divisions of the American
Psychological Society, a member of the (honorary) Computer Human Interaction
Academy, and the (honorary) Society of Experimental Psychologists. He
is a named inventor on five patents for applications of LSA. As academic
researcher since joining the University of Colorado, he has been PI
or Co-PI on grants from DARPA, the McDonnell Foundation, the Army Research
Institute, NSF, IES and others. As president of KAT he has been closely
involved in the design and supervision of several SBIR contracts for
R&D on educational technology and multilingual search engines, funded
by NSF, DoEd, ARI, AFRL, DARPA, ONR and NASA.
