The Advanced Technology Academies and the Advanced Photonics Academy, provide a high school based learning environment for students with map to the real world of meaningful employment and a technology focus. It’s a great starting place for students whose “maps” are still open and flexible. The first four year cycle of the Advanced Technology Academies proved that motivated students, well-equipped facilities, interested parents and teachers, and a supportive community are a winning combination for keeping students in school and providing them with state-of-the-art tools to build a future of their choice.
These students are now working at Sandia National Laboratories and pursuing a technology-related degree at UNM or T-VI. These employment and academic successes are positive proof that the program provides students with a useful foundation for exciting educational or job opportunities, as well as a path to accessing those opportunities. The program offers students a choice previously unavailable to them at the high school level. Please visit the Put a Little Science In Your Future video (A Media Player version of v9 or greater will be needed to view this video). This award-winning rap video has been developed at the suggestion of teachers to encourage 7th and 8th grade middle school students to stay in school and graduate; pursue interests in science, math, and technology; and explore opportunities offered by the Advanced Technology Academy. Video, produced by Sandia National Laboratories, stars Jay Dee Lopez, a native Albuquerque musician and University of New Mexico student, and features students and faculty from West Mesa High School in Albuquerque.
