Why Sandia is a great place to work

I get to work on cutting edge technology that’s improtant to the nation with some of the best minds in the country. The breadth of the work going on here is amazing. Since I’ve been at Sandia, I’ve been able to design MEMS die, analyze forces and torques on electromechanical devices, and work with folks who are doing work on minimizing and improving electrical components. Albuquerque is a great place to live as well – I’m a marathon runner and there are lots of great trails and the weather is usually great for a run!

Why I am a recruiter for Sandia

I get to tell others about how great working at Sandia is! Additionally, I like to interact with students and find out what they are working on – you never know…what you’re working on today may help with some of the research going on at the Labs. I also have my own personal motive for recruiting – getting to visit all of my old favorite places to eat (even though NM is the land of green chili, they still can’t touch a Burrito Brothers burrito from UF!)

Why Sandia is a great place to work

I came to Sandia because of the world-class facilities available to develop advanced technologies needed to tackle the big scientific and engineering challenges of the 21st century. There is extraordinary satisfaction in knowing that the work Sandia performs has significant benefits to our country and is vital to assuring national and global security. The 9/80 work option, where every other week is a three-day weekend, is the best part of Sandia’s program to encourage a healthy work/life balance. There are also great opportunities for technical staff to augment their formal education with business and project management certifications.

Why I am a recruiter for Sandia

The success of Sandia is critically dependent on the work of exceptional people who are dedicated to service in the national interest. Recruiting at my alma mater helps to bring the nation’s most qualified graduates to Sandia. On-campus visits allow me to keep in touch with students, faculty, and academic research relevant to Sandia programs.

Justin Ford

Justin FordOccupation:I am presently a Senior Member of Technical Staff in the integrated micro-device systems department. While I have remained in the same department since starting at Sandia I have contributed to many different projects. Most of my work focuses on developing low power, sensor-based, wireless communication-enabled prototypes. For example, I am presently developing an intelligent receptacle to enable smart grid control of household loads.

Length of time at Sandia: Completed a summer internship in 2004, started full time in June 2005

Site Location: Sandia New Mexico

College(s) and degree(s):

  • BS in Electrical Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 2003
  • MS in Electrical Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 2005

Why Sandia is a great place to work

The best part of working at Sandia is having the freedom to define my own career path. Being able to work on a variety of different projects with different people provides a perfect balance of effort and reward. I get to learn new things, do work that I like, and I don’t end up doing the same thing ever again. Everyone here has a lot of discretion with regard to what they work on, who they work with, and what organization they work in.

Why I am a recruiter for Sandia

Recruiting is about two things for me: 1) letting people know what Sandia is and why it’s a good place to work, and 2) keeping a tie to my alma mater, the faculty there, and meeting current students.

What's on my iPod

I’m a closet metal head: my favorite group is Nine Inch Nails (okay, so that’s really industrial rock but “metal” is close enough). I also listen to Evanescence, Slipknot, and when I’m in the mood for something light, Linkin Park.

Why Sandia is a great place to work

I think that the way to grow as an engineer and a person is to surround myself with intelligent and successful people. This is most certainly the case at the labs. I continue to learn from the people around me and attribute a lot of my success to co-workers and mentors. The culture at the Labs is one that allows for inexperienced staff to feel that they are equals to some of the higher ranked, experienced staff. This culture is a key to the kind of teamwork that leads to success.

Why I am a recruiter for Sandia

I believe that Sandia is a great place to work and I think that the passionate, smart people that work at Sandia are the reason that the Labs continue to thrive. My wish is that Sandia’s reputation maintains the high standard and that the work we do continues to support the needs of National Security.
