Sandia's Decontamination Formulation has the potential for preventing
or mitigating disease outbreaks and reducing contamination of foodstuffs.
Sandia's decon formulation was developed for mitigation and decontamination
of chemical and biological (CBW) agents. It can be deployed as a
foam, liquid spray, or fog. Experimental results indicate that the
formulation works quickly, is effective against both chemical and biological
agents, and does not generate toxic by-products. The consortium consisting
of Sandia, KSU, and NMSU will address problems such as the following: 1)
food preparation facilities; 2) disinfecting or decontamination of livestock
production systems, e.g. live animals, holding areas and conveyances, carcasses,
and slaughter and process equipment, 3) decontamination of animal water
and feed systems, 4) treatment of topical infections, 5) hand-washing or
foot/shoe baths, 6) sterilization of soils, seed, produce, or eggs, 7)
waste or sewage treatment, or 8) pest control. Sandia, KSU, and NMSU will
investigate the applications that will be beneficial to the agriculture
environment in mitigation and decontamination of chemical and
biological warfare agents introduced by acts of bio-terrorism
Improved decontamination technologies have the potential for preventing
or mitigating disease outbreaks and reducing contamination of foodstuffs.
This task will investigate the application of an existing product, SNL’s
decontamination formulation, to a wide variety of agricultural and food
industry problems. These problems include the following:
|
|
- Disinfection or decontamination of livestock production systems, e.g.,
live animals, holding areas and conveyances, carcasses, and slaughter and
process equipment;
- Decontamination of water and feed systems, including animal feeds;
- Treatment of topical infections;
- Hand washing or foot/shoe baths;
- Sterilization of soils, seed, produce, or eggs;
- Waste, sewage treatment, or pest control.
