Robotics and intelligent systems
The Intelligent Systems and Robotics Center has been one of the most active participants in developing small, highly rugged tele-operated robots for a variety of applications, including law enforcement and military reconnaissance and surveillance applications. Many organizations now believe that unmanned systems are now capable of performing operations that will remove the exposure of humans to highly hazardous tasks, and are beginning to conduct interesting field experiments to develop strategies for conducting their operations in new ways using unmanned mobile robots. However, to successfully determine the utility of unmanned mobile robots, robots must be designed to be highly reliable -- nearly indestructible -- capable of operating in many difficult environments, and have sufficient field endurance, specifically energy, to be of benefit. Sandia programs are demonstrating that such highly durable robots can be built and maintained. (15200) (ETSBU)
