MANOS SCIENCE & ENGINEERING PROGRAM 2005 WORKSHOPS

Students can enroll in one of the following workshops:
Computer Discovery
Wonderful World of Electronics
Fun with Math and Money
Magic of Physics Workshop
ChemisTry Exploration
Robotics

Computer Discovery
Have fun with computers! What makes a computer tick and how can you use it? Take a computer apart. Connect to the internet. Use email to communicate with friends. Build your own personal web page for others to see. Program and control a robot to make it do what you want it to. Do a scavenger hunt, dissect a frog and solve problems. Compete against your classmates for prizes.

Workshop Coordinator:
Mike Garcia, Sandia National Laboratories
Phone: (505) 844-0381; email: mrgarci@sandia.gov

Wonderful World of Electronics
What is a Component? What is an integrated circuit and how does it work? What makes a computer work? Who is Ohm and what is it? How is the flow of electricity controlled ? Build many circuit projects including a keyboard.

Workshop Coordinators:
Joe Maez, Sandia National Laboratories
Phone: (505) 844-1185; email: jmaez@sandia.gov

Tim Mirabal, Sandia National Laboratories
Phone: (505) 844-5951; email: mirabatj@sandia.gov

Liz Huffman, Sandia National Laboratories
Phone: (505) 845-8778; email: emhuffm@sandia.gov

Fun with Math & Money
Can you guess how many Red M&M's are in a jar? Do you know what PI is? Do you know how to make your money "grow"? How can you visit 10 cities in as little time as possible? This class uses fun games to help you answer these questions.

Workshop Coordinator:
John Romero, Sandia National Laboratories
Phone: (505) 844-0315; email: jrromer@sandia.gov

Magic of Physics Workshop
How does a rocket work and fly? Do you think you can build and fly a rocket? Learn the principles of physics by conducting experiments in: force, mass, energy, friction, momentum, fluids, heat, magnetism and optics.

Workshop Coordinators:
Rita Gonzales, Sandia National Laboratories
Phone: (505) 844-8778; email: ragonza@sandia.gov

Danny Rey, Sandia National Laboratories
Phone: (505) 844-8797; email: drey@sandia.gov

Dan Urenda, Sandia National Laboratories
Phone: (505) 845-8417; email: dnurend@sandia.gov

ChemisTRY Exploration
How do they make fireworks different colors? What makes bread rise? Is shampoo really "pH balanced" like the commercials say and are all sunscreens the same? How does chemistry help to investigate a crime scene? Sign up and discover the answers to these and other interesting questions in the world of chemistry.

Workshop Coordinators:
Saskia King, Sandia National Laboratories
Phone: (505) 845-9553, email: shking@sandia.gov

Malynda Aragon, Sandia National Laboratories
Phone: (505) 844-1288, email: malarag@sandia.gov

Robotics
Students learn how to build and program robots and work with LEGO MINDSTORM KITS. Students will learn how to make robots follow lines, including how to use touch and light sensors. The students will learn about career pathways in high wage, high technology fields. They will also learn about the importance of teamwork in a competitive environment.

Workshop Coordinator:
Robert LaFarge, Sandia National Laboratories
Phone: (505) 844-1077, email: ralafar@sandia.gov
