Production and Manufacturing
Sandia has more than 40 years' experience in production, military weapons maintenance and engineering, and nuclear weapons training. We maintain the technical competency required to support the enduring stockpile and to work proactively to anticipate the needs of our customers and the Nation. We leverage Sandia's broad capabilities to meet the expectations of our customers with emphasis on performance, schedule, and value.
Our principal customer, the Department of Energy (DOE), expects us to reduce costs, shorten product realization cycle times, maintain high quality and reliability, produce intermittent and small lots, design robust systems and components, and maintain production readiness with reduced resources in the post-Cold-War era. Sandia has formed the Manufacturing Science and Technology Council (MSTC) to coordinate and strengthen our response to these challenges.
Now Sandia is putting this experience to work for American industry. We are working to revolutionize industrial practices through the concepts of agility and by maximizing the use of information and models to enhance manufacturing, from raw materials to products. As a part of this effort we will
- Provide agile processes (where appropriate) for delivery of reliable, mission related hardware.
- Increase the transfer of Sandia's manufacturing know-how to industry.
- Make maximum use of computer models and process information to reduce cost.
Other pages in this brochure present information on three examples of Sandia's work on risk assessment for production and manufacturing:
