Physical Security

Sandia is the Department of Energy's (DOE's) lead laboratory for physical security. Our security-systems engineering organization has expertise in
We use the tools and techniques of risk assessment primarily in the area of security systems analysis.

In the early 1970's, the DOE directed Sandia to develop concepts and technologies to address the concern of theft of nuclear materials being transported between DOE facilities. We also began to develop a technical capability in security modeling and systems analysis, security equipment and components, and security systems engineering, integration and implementation. As a result of these programs, Sandia is today the only DOE entity with totally integrated capabilities in physical security systems and technologies, equipped to deal effectively with any security threat.

Our security systems analysis capabilities include
Our expertise in security component technologies includes the following abilities:
Finally, we provide expertise in security systems design, integration, and implementation. Our strengths are in the following areas:
Using this broad base of expertise in physical security systems, we provide innovative and cost-effective solutions that protect nuclear and other vital assets, enhance the security of our citizens, and mitigate crime, fraud and theft.
