Environment and
Environmental Restoration

Sandia has a responsibility to develop solutions for problems in waste management, site remediation or stabilization, hazardous material transportation, and environmentally conscious manufacturing and to share those solutions with industry. The Environmental Program at Sandia addresses a broad range of problems, from those that are national and international in scope to those challenging states and local communities. Environmental issues associated with manufacturing and waste management are at the top of industry's agenda. The DOE itself is a major consumer of environmental technology services as it cleans up its sites from decades of weapons production. Risk assessment, risk communication, and risk management play important roles in all these areas.

We apply Sandia's unique capabilities and facilities to the technology and processes required to minimize waste generation through environmentally conscious manufacturing and operations, to manage and transport hazardous and radioactive materials, and to restore contaminated sites and facilities safely and economically while meeting all applicable regulatory requirements. Our goal is to assure that our lab-wide operations meet high standards of excellence in environment, safety, and health while we perform important work that enhances the quality of life and economic competitiveness of the Nation. The appropriate use of risk management in our environmental operations allows us to solve problems created by many decades of operation of the nuclear weapons complex and to enable appropriate use of site resources for future programs.

The Environmental Program is widely diversified, with capabilities in many areas. In addition to risk analysis, the program includes numerous projects in systems analysis, field testing and evaluation, materials engineering, geosciences, engineering analysis, intelligent robotics systems, chemical process design and control, environmental sciences, and regulatory analysis.

Other pages in this brochure present information on seven examples of Sandia's work on risk assessment in environmental programs:
