Technology Development and Site Operations

The DOE laboratories, such as Sandia, have a mission responsibility to develop solutions for problems in waste management, site remediation or stabilization, hazardous material transportation, and environmentally conscious manufacturing and to share those solutions with industry. The Environmental Program at Sandia addresses a broad range of National and International problems, including those faced by Federal agencies (e.g., DOE, DoD, EPA) and those challenging State and local communities. Environmental issues associated with manufacturing and waste management are at the top of industry's agenda. In addition, the DOE itself is a major consumer of environmental technology services as it cleans up its sites from decades of weapons production.

The mission of the Environmental Program is to develop and apply our unique Sandia capabilities and facilities to the technology and processes required to minimize the generation of waste through environmentally conscious manufacturing and operations, to manage and transport hazardous and/or radioactive materials, and to restore contaminated sites and facilities in a safe and economical manner meeting all applicable regulatory requirements. This complements and strengthens the strategic goals of Sandia by assuring our lab-wide operations meet high standards of environment, safety, and health (ES&H) excellence while performing important work that enhances the quality of life and economic competitiveness of our Nation. Environmental operations allow us to solve problems created by many decades of operation of the nuclear weapons complex as well as other DOE tasks and to enable appropriate use of site resources for future programs. Environmental technology both facilitates Sandia operations and allows us to make significant contributions on a national level. The environmental technology market is large, growing, and important to our national health and economic competitiveness. We team with industry and other national laboratories to deliver our technology products and services to this market.

The Environmental Program is widely diversified and utilizes capabilities in many areas. These include systems analysis, field test and evaluation, materials engineering, geosciences, engineering analysis, intelligent robotics systems, risk analysis, chemical process design and control, environmental sciences, and regulatory analysis.
