Shown in this image is the propagation of a detonation wave onto a metal target that generates a shock wave in the metal target at the end of the cylinder. The calculation, generated by the Virtual Test Facility software of Caltech's ASC Alliance Center is noteworthy in that it couples a Eularian fluid mechanics simulation based on Cartesian meshes and parallel adaptive mesh refinement with a fully Lagrangian solid mechanics algorithm based on tetrahedral meshes.—California Institute of Technology
